say goodbye to IE6

The fact now is, is that IE6 is so insecure and with so many security holes, the question you should be asking your self is "WHY are we still using it"?

Well to be honest we don't. But others may not have a choice due to the working environment. It amazes me that local councils and large organisations still insist on using IE6, with the security holes in ie6 one would think that this would be more important to them than a browser. IE6 came out back in 2001 and has since been superseded by IE7 and now IE8 which is by far the better and more secure of the three versions.

At present 1 in 8 people still use IE6 even though it is less than that for people visiting our website we have still had to ensure that the site functions and looks at least 90% the same as it does in IE8. The problem with IE6 is that is does not understand all the new technology, css, javascript etc that today's modern browsers do, so that is when people run into problems, they will either phone you up, or send you an email saying i can not do this, i can not buy this from your site etc, the chances are they are using IE6, and in fact there is nothing wrong with your website, it is just that they are still using IE6, so your first question may be, "what browser are you using" and could you please upgrade to IE7 or IE8 then everything will function as it was designed to do.

If you don't believe us then read some news comments below:

As you may have seen FireFox (our preferred browser by far) is the most popular browser being used across the globe with an astonishing 47.4% of people using it daily

Still the question remains should be build websites for our clients to be compatible with IE6. The answer to that is well urrm yes and no!

  1. We will support IE6 for simple brochure style websites
  2. We will ensure that the site will function in IE6 even though it may not look pixel perfect.
  3. We will not develop sites for IE6 for ecommerce sites, the work involved is to costly to us and the customer.
  4. Will we ever drop support for IE6? Yes we will be dropping all support for IE6 at the beginning of 2010.
